Loin de Rueil is a novel of "waking reverie." Jacques l’Aumône, its protagonist, daydreams his way through life, imagining a hundred possible lives as he lives his own.
A few lines read at random, a fleeting encounter, or a passing remark are enough to spark his departure from himself. He becomes a boxer, a general, a bishop, or a nobleman.
He lives alongside his own life with dedication and persistence, transitioning so naturally between reality and dream that he likely no longer knows exactly who he is. Eventually, he becomes an actor in Hollywood, becoming himself the starting point for endless reveries.
Jacques l’Aumône, like the characters who surround him, possesses that blend of haunting and fluid consistency characteristic of the figures in our dreams. Here, reverie takes shape through the lens of humor—sometimes light, sometimes cruel—and through a writing technique reminiscent of cinematic storytelling.
Raymond Queneau was also the co-founder and president of Oulipo (Ouvroir de littérature potentielle), notable for his wit and cynical humor.
