First staged in 2017 at Tehran’s Vahdat Hall with a different cast, the revival stays true to the original structure and script while introducing updates to the dialogue and several musical numbers. According to the creative team, the revisions aim to underscore the story’s enduring themes of social inequality and the human struggle for dignity.
Directed by Hossein Parsaei and produced by Jalil Kia, the large-scale production features an ensemble of prominent Iranian actors, including Hootan Shakiba, Behnoush Tabatabaei, Banipal Shoomoon, and Amir-Kaveh Ahaninjan, with Siamak Ansari and Kazem Sayahi in leading roles.
Adapted from Charles Dickens’ classic 19th-century novel, the Tehran staging draws on Lionel Bart’s original score, with dramaturgy by Mohammad-Reza Kouhestani and contributions from a team of theatre and music professionals.
The roles of Oliver and the Artful Dodger are shared among young actors Rayan Sarlak, Parham Gholamloo, and Arsham Jahanpanah, reflecting the production’s commitment to nurturing emerging stage talent.
The 2025 revival features a new artistic design that departs from the visual style of its 2017 version, combining updated choreography, lighting, and stage aesthetics to deliver a fresh interpretation of Dickens’ timeless tale.
